I meant to post a few days back and real life got in the way.

The election campaign has displaced Manchester in the headlines, but Friday night at least there were armed policewomen down by the Barclaycard Arena. I don't think they're patrolling down there anymore. What surprised me was how little that didn't disturb me. Maybe because it was a hot summer night and there were many people drinking and laughing by the towpath. Saturday I saw armed coppers when I was in Wolverhampton with [personal profile] cybermule (I miss you - three weeks is too damn long) and it unsettled me then. That city was quiet, though. I want to explore it more; architecturally it's much richer/variegated than Brum: Georgian and Deco buildings and a red sandstone church (Saint Peters) that hasn't been cleaned too much. That's a good thing: they did that to St Martins near the rag market and it looked bland-bare once the soot had come off.

I've set myself a goal. I want to bring out a short story collection - called ideally While The Shadows Last, bringing together old and new weird fiction - sometime in the near future. I've already queried a publisher I respect. Now I need to put together a working manuscript. I have maybe half the word count from existing work: I went out for a long and not wholly liquid lunch with JH Sunday afternoon and talked about it lots. If you read this John, thank you for the encouragement!

There is a request for a bio in the inbox, so with luck Supernatural Tales 35 will be out next month, carrying my story To Utter Dust.

Finally, hello and thank you to [personal profile] sovay , [personal profile] rydra_wong , and [personal profile] lost_spook for brightening up my day with an entertaining thread on Sapphire and Steel and David Colling's hair. You rock!

Real life keeps knocking everything sideways. I want just a couple of weeks where I don't have to do anything but read and watch movies and write about things, but I don't think I'm going to get it. At the moment I am feeling furiously dim about the planet's future and I don't even know what to write about that.

Nice. (Have I read that one?)

It was a wonderful conversation! I love when people talk to each other in my comments. It's like suddenly having a tiny community.

The only reaction I've been able to muster so far re: 45's latest decision is call him a smear of shit on Facebook. It's not enough.

Maybe not, but I can't disagree.

I think so - it's the library story.

It had a different title when I read it! I really like that one (and still want the story about Sepia). Congratulations again.

It was just as delightful and unexpected for me! Have a pic of him in Scrooge (which, if you like Mr Collings, you should definitely acquire - it's fairly easy to obtain by all methods):

Good luck with the book - it sounds like an interesting collection.

Oh, and, he turned up in Holby last year, too, the first time modern TV has remembered he exists in like twenty years. He was still just as improbable as ever, bless him:

Scrooge is very pretty, he sings, and his several red-headed children! :-)

I have much more mixed feelings about Full Fathom Five, as there are bits about it I really dislike, but I love his performance - I think it's one of his best audio things, because he brings a very recognisably Doctor-ish quality to this dark Doctor. I hate the ending, though, and the plot is a bit rubbish, but at the same time... (It's the sort of mixed feelings that inevitably led to fic.) So maybe? Maybe not? Maybe it's never a good time to talk about FFF!

One of the stories I'm working on owes a debt to various assignments; I'm trying to keep skipping rope songs sinister!

Oh, yes, very S&S. (And skipping rope rhymes often are bit sinister...)
