My first book of the year was Richard Mabey's excellent Beechcombings: the Narrative of Trees, which makes me wish there were more beeches growing round here, apart from the brace of fine old trees that stand outside the "castle-house" up the lane. They're a favourite haunt for the local jackdaws. Lately I've seen starlings using them too - they sound like friendly untuned radios. Now I'm reading David Toop's "history of listening" Sinister Resonance, that treats sound as a haunting ([personal profile] sovay , this is the one that doesn't mention The Stone Tape.) It's interesting so far, if a bit dry.

The editor liked my essay on Course of the Heart, so I bought myself a couple of goodies from Ebay as a "well done" for actually writing anything. A 40s field guide to ferns, then a bit of jewellery yesterday (I don't wear much of it, just a crow's skull pendant I never take off). This is a lovely little silver-and-resin ring, tufts of lemon and mint-green lichen and the tiniest snail-shell in the cabochon. It's too damn cold to go out bare-handed, so I shan't sport it for a bit yet. Next up, I'll be reviewing the Swan River Press anthology Ghosts of the Chit-Chat for an M. R. James zine and trying to find some new fiction. Made an FB post asking for writing prompts and then accidentally deleted it in my tiredness. I do remember the suggestions though. My memory is pretty shot but ideas and images always seem to stand out in the fog.

My dad got the second part of his vaccination this morning, so that at least is something good to come of the COVID shitshow; I thought he'd have to wait another ten weeks.

I go to the devil in the devil's name

So today obviously went damn near close to the Devil, but I have been playing Fay Hield's "Hare Spell" over and over since I looked it up from your quotation of it here and I really appreciate it. I am going to have to track down the rest of the album.

Beechcombings also sounds like something a decent facsimile of you could be fashioned from.

I'm really glad to hear about your dad.

*hugs*
