The countries where I cannot read
Mar. 9th, 2023 12:36 amSnow has fallen all day. It only started settling at tea-time. I took a picture of the field just now (it's after midnight) and it looked like dusk on my mobile screen. Despite this, hawthorn is coming into leaf in the hedges. The young leaves are nice to nibble on (an old country name for them is "bread and cheese") - pleasantly bitter, a bit like rocket, perhaps?
I came back from seeing a friend in town to find a copy of Vernon Watkins' "Ballad of the Mari Lwyd and Other Poems" waiting for me. Some of you will know I'm mildly obsessed with the Grey Mare and I've been after this book for a while now. It rarely turns up for sale online for under fifty quid, so I snapped it up when I got an offer for a quarter of the price. This does feel like Mari-weather.

Date: 2023-03-09 01:17 am (UTC)I had no idea hawthorn could be eaten! I feel better for knowing it.
I am so glad your Mari-book made it for this in-between time of year. I love the way snow-light lingers in the sky.

Date: 2023-03-09 01:27 am (UTC)I think it might work as a garnishing in a Cheddar sandwich (a doorstop one, of course). There's hawthorn tea as well - I've not tried that.
I love snow-light too, and the hush that comes with this weather.

Date: 2023-03-09 01:51 am (UTC)That sounds great. My dinner was a sandwich of olive bread and goat cheese.
There's hawthorn tea as well - I've not tried that.
Please report back if you do!
I wish it were snowing here.
